One of the most important functions of the Graduate Student Council is to allocate the GSC portion of the Student Activity Fees that Graduate School students pay every term. These activity fees are the sole source of GSC funding. There are two ways to request GSC funding: funding for specific events and through a chartered student organization.

SPECIFIC EVENT FUNDING

Each year, the GSC makes funds available to co-sponsor activities such as guest speakers, film festivals, conferences, cultural celebrations, and other activities that contribute to the academic community at Emory University. This funding, limited to $500.00 per event, is intended to serve as supplemental funding in conjuncture with university, departmental, foundation, or institution funding. The procedure for funding shall be as follows:

  1. No later than the 20th of the month preceding the event, the requesting student or organization shall submitt to the GSC treasurer an explanation of the event and how it will benefit graduates students, proposed budget, and a list of organizations contributing funding to the event and heir respective contributions. The information should be in electronic format.
  2. The budget committee will meet before the monthly GSC meeting to approve or deny request. Anyone with an interest in the event funding, including the group making the request, may be present at the meeting. Approved request will be put on the agenda for the monthly meeting. A copy of the request will be available for viewing in the GSCBudget conference.
  3. At the GSC monthly meeting, a GS student must present the above-mentioned information about the funding request. The representative should be prepared to make a brief presentation about the proposed event and answer questions from those present at the meeting.
  4. A request shall be approved with a simple majority vote of the eligible voters. An affirmative vote shall authorize the GSC Treasurer to transfer the appropriate funds.
    e. Upon approval of the funding request, the requesting student or organization must submit information about the event to the Secretary(ies) to be posted on the GSC website.
  5. Upon completion of the event being funded by the GSC, the requesting student or organization must submit a report to the GSC treasurer, which summarizes the event, includes the approximate number of GS students who attended the event, and details the methods of advertisement.
  6. If approved, it is the responsibility of the requesting group/organizer to provide the GSC Treasurer with all the information necessary for the transfer of funds (i.e., the department/organization name, contact information, and account number). Funds will then be transferred to the designated account within one month. Under no conditions are funds disbursed directly to students.
  7. For all funded events, the "Emory GSC" or "Emory Graduate Student Council" should be listed on programs and in advertising as a co-sponsor of the event. All events receiving GSC funding will be placed on the Events page on the GSC website.

"SHOW ME THE MONEY!"
Our Student Activity Fees

The GSC receives 74% of the total Student Activity Fees paid by GS students each term. The remainder is distributed to other student groups, such as Student Legal Services, the Grad Senate, and the SGA, that provide services to GS students.

For more specific details, see the SGA Monetary Code and the SGA Fee Split.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION CHARTERING

The GSC charters a small number of student organizations devoted to particular interests that appeal to a wide range of GS students (see Organizations page for a list of current organizations). Chartered organizations require constitutions that meet both GSC and Emory University Student Government Association (SGA) guidelines including the election of officers, and are eligible to submit regular budgets and be allocated funding on a yearly basis.

The process for chartering a student organization is complicated. The process starts with the granting of a temporary charter and then the granting of a perpetual charter that permits the organization to submit and be allocated yearly budgets. Be aware that the total process takes an average of a year to complete, and funding will not be available until the next budget year (September to August) after that.

If you are interested in chartering a student organization under the GSC, please consult the following documents:
