Emory University's

Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta is the international sociology honor society that recognizes outstanding majors in the discipline.  The name "Alpha Kappa Delta" represents the first letters of the three Greek words anthropon (humankind), katamanthaneion (to investigate thoroughly or to conduct research), and diakonesein (for the purpose of service).  AKD has thousands of members in over 470 chapters worldwide.  Membership in AKD is for a lifetime.

Eligible students are invited at the beginning of the Spring term and inducted in April.   To be eligible, you must:

  • be at least a junior (or 3rd year) student majoring in sociology
  • have completed at least 5 courses (20 hours) in sociology
  • have at least a 3.2 GPA in those courses
  • have at least a 3.2 GPA overall

Each year AKD sponsors at least one event for all interested undergraduates.  Recent events include a Career Panel on "What You Can Do With a Sociology Major," a resume-writing workshop courtesy of Emory's Career Center, and various community service projects in conjunction with Volunteer Emory.  AKD members also assist in organizing the Southeastern Undergraduate Sociology Symposium, an annual conference for sociology students held alternately at Emory University and Morehouse College in Atlanta.
