The Second Annual Emory Fall Classic

Date: Saturday, September 13th, 2003.

Place: Our very own Emory University in Atlanta, GA. We hope to have rooms in the Callaway Center and Woodruff Library like last year.

Time: Registration starts at 8:30AM, announcements at 9. Hopefully we'll be getting the first games started at 9:20.

Format: The field will be limited to a maximum of 36 teams. We guarantee teams at least 8 and up to 11 rounds of preliminary competition, depending on the number of entries and bracketing system that we use. Further information will be available here on the website (or sent by mail, upon request) once we have a gauge on the field size. Playoffs will take the top sixteen teams for a simple, single-elimination bracketed final.

All games will consist of twenty 10-point Tossups, each leading to a 30-point bonus set broken down into multiples of five, with NO BOUNCEBACKS. Teams may confer on bonus sets, with the captain giving the team's answer unless he/she designates another player. Rounds are UNTIMED. Teams may have only 4 players competing at one time, but player substitutions may be made between games and at halftime (after the 10th tossup and its corresponding bonus set have been read). Complete rules will be given out at opening announcements, the location of which, when finalized, will be sent out to schools by email as well as posted on this website.

Eligibility: We are accepting teams regardless of geographic location, so long as all players are enrolled in grades 9-12 at the high school for which they are competing. For manageability, the field will be limited to 36 teams, with no more than 2 teams per school allowed to register until August 31st, after which any teams will be accepted otherwise on a first come, first serve basis. Teams that have registered but drop before August 31st will have registration fees refunded, but teams that drop ON OR AFTER that date will not. If you register after August 31st, please bring your registration with you to the tournament instead of mailing it to us, but please notify us that you plan to attend so that we can reserve you a spot.

Price: $60/team, with a $5 discount for a WORKING lockout buzzer system. If you bring a second system and we end up using it, we will give you an additional $5 discount. We will award another $5 discount for a coach or sponsor who is willing to moderate for the duration of the tournament (up until playoffs). A reminder that bringing a non-functional buzzer system tends to delay room setup. Please help us out by bringing only working ones.

Note: If you are claiming discounts for buzzer systems or readers (who can also be the school sponsor), CLEARLY indicate

1) the name of the readers, and
2) how many buzzer systems you are bringing.

Please make all checks payable to "Emory Academic Team" and send all registration information (School name, school sponsor's name, phone number, address, and optional e-mail address, number of teams, and registration fees/buzzer system/reader information) to:

Gerry Tansey
Mathematics and Science Center Suite W401
400 Dowman Drive
Atlanta, GA 30322

When you send us your registration, it is very important that all of this information is in the address. If possible, please email us (pcleric @ learnlink.emory.edu) to let us know that you have mailed your registration.

For your convenience, the links at left lead to Word files containing our registration form, driving directions to the Emory Campus, and a list of local hotels. A campus map identifying the buildings in which games will be held will be available once we have confirmed which buildings we will be using.
